Map of Switzerland showing cantons, major highways, cities, waterways and mountains.....
Switzerland is a relatively small, landlocked, central European country . It is located east of France, north of Italy and west of Austria and Germany with it's coordinates at 47 00 N and 8 00 E. The total size in square kilometers is 41,277 with 1,280 sq km made up of bodies of water.
The climate is temperate and changes with the altitude throughout the land. The summers temperatures range from cool to warm with many cloudy and humid days. Winters in Switzerland are generally cold, cloudy and damp with rain or snow depending on the temperature each day.
The elevation of the terrain varies greatly with the highest point being Dufourspitze at 4,634 m above sea level and the lowest being Lake Maggiore at 195m.
Due to all of the mountains and rivers, hydro electric power is Switzerland's biggest potential natural resource along with timber and salt. Because of all of the mountains the amount of arable land is small, only 9.8%.
The mountains and rivers are prone to such natural disasters as avalanches, landslides and flash floods. Despite attempts to treat the environment nicely, the country also has environmental issues such as air pollution from vehicle emissions and water ways tainted with farm pesticides.
